On the 9th of May we will celebrate Europe Day. This year you can do it best by joining the first EU SIGN DAY.
eusignday.eu is the first self-organized campaign to show institutions what we mean when we say "equal dignity for participatory democracy": investing resources to increase awareness to millions of European of the possibility to sign European Citizens' Initiatives, the pan-European participation tool envisaged by the European Treaties.
In 2019, 36 million euros were spent on the This Time I am Voting campaign to increase the turnout in the European elections. We want the same effort to be made to let all citizens know which signature collections are underway. It is the only way for which the goal of one million signatures is actually achievable for citizens' committees and for the right political engagement.
In recent weeks on EUMANS Agora 'we have collected all the responses received to the letter sent in February to Commissioner Jourova and to all the European institutions. You can read the responses of the Commissioner herself, the Economic and Social Committee, and the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli.
Each answer - and the dialogue among activists of different European Citizens Initiatives and organisations (full list on the eusignday.eu website) - confirms that we identified a fundamental path to put the tools and proposals of participatory democracy at the centre of the political debate in Europe, whilst strengthening the role of citizens at the start of the Conference on the Future of Europe.
EUROPEAN CITIZENS INITIATIVES - ALARMING DATA BY YOUGOV - ONLY 2.4% OF EUROPEANS KNOW ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF THE EUROPEAN CITIZENS INITIATIVE, THE ONLY PARTICIPATORY DEMOCRACY INSTRUMENT OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
In the Thursday meetings of EUMANS, with the promoters of EU SIGN DAY, we decided to self-finance and commission a survey to YouGov to collect statistical data on a sample of citizens in four very different European countries (Germany, Italy, Finland and Portugal) and find out how much citizens know about the European Citizens' Initiative.
At this link you can dowload all the datasets of the Survey - if you use them, don't forget to mention the EU SIGN DAY initiative and the link to eusignday.eu
At this link you can endorse the proposals prepared with the supporters of EU SIGN DAY on the digital platform of the Conference on the Future of Europe for ordinary and extraordinary measures of information for participatory democracy in the European Union
DONATE TO COVER THE COSTS OF THE SURVEY AND TO INCREASE THE DISTRIBUTION
LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT EUROPE DAY IS THE EU SIGN DAY
eusignday.eu is the site dedicated to the initiative. Many organizations and institutions that have already responded to our invitation to run the link and the hashtags #EuSignDay #SignNow #TheFutureIsYours: the Europe Direct Centers in Lyon, Pula, Munich; the Representation of the European Commission in Estonia, the Volt Europe party, the 3Million European citizens in the United Kingdom, as well as obviously the organizations that co-promote the initiative and that you can find on the site.
On 8th and 9th May, change your profile photo on Facebook, share the link to the site https://eusignday.eu on your social channels or with the organisations you are in contact with that are organising events to celebrate Europe Day. Additionally, ask to insert a link, a banner, or a reference during the appointments you attend. Or invite the promoters of the European Citizens' Initiatives as guests.
We look forward to renewing Europe Day - and strengthen European democracy together.
