Ukraine: Cappato, for Ukraine a just and sustainable peace and a future in the EU (ITA/EN)

Eumans, the pan-European popular initiative movement founded by Marco Cappato, joins the demonstration in support of Ukraine and against the Russian war of invasion, to be held in Milan on Saturday the 5th of November from 4pm in Piazza Sempione, Arco della Pace.

Ever since the outbreak of the war, EUMANS has been advocating for the need to pursue a 'sustainable peace', i.e. a peace that is not based on acceptance of the status quo, i.e. the surrender of the aggressed people, but on the affirmation of the international rule of law and fundamental freedoms and democratic principles in Ukraine. In particular, these assertions were outlined during the EUMANS congress in March 2022 in Warsaw, and through the initiative ‘Eukraine Now’, organised in May 2022 with the Ukrainian community.

The campaign for sustainable peace is based on four goals, as outlined by EUMANS, with the affirmation that they are central to Saturday's mobilisation:

  • Ukraine's accession to the EU: speeding up the approval of Ukraine's candidature as a Member State as a symbolic and political signal of Europe's openness towards the East and the South-East, in order to guarantee the rights granted to people through European Citizenship.

  • Ukraine's urgent ratification of the Rome Statute in order to prosecute violations of international humanitarian law according to the highest standards of the International Criminal Court.

  • Incrimination of those responsible for the aggression against Ukraine, starting with placing the political perpetrator Vladimir Putin before an international criminal court.
  • Implementation of the proposals which emerged from the Conference on the Future of Europe on common peace corps and common energy policy; Specifically, recommendations two and twenty, of the European Citizens' Group 4 'The EU in the World / Migration', for the establishment of an energy policy on renewables and independent from external dependencies, and the establishment of a 'Joint EU Armed Forces', in order to bring closer the goal of long-term and sustainable peace in Europe and globally.

These objectives should be the focus of a European Citizens' Assembly and an European referendum - new instruments of participatory democracy that COFOE itself has called for (points 18 and 39) regarding "European Democracy / Values and Rights, Rule of Law, Security".

Marco Cappato, Co-President of EUMANS said: "Only by activating popular participation will it be possible to achieve the ambitious and urgent goals for a real sustainable peace in Ukraine. I will be present with EUMANS in Milano to bring these proposals to the heart of the mobilisation in the hope that the organisers and participants of the demonstrations in Milan and Rome - and anywhere else in Europe - will share them in order to make them possible."
