Ukraine in the EU: demonstration/signature drive in 10 European cities prior to June decision by EU Heads of State and Government

CAPPATO / FIUME (EUMANS): On May 28, demonstrations will be held in Vienna, Brussels, Luxembourg, Prague, Milan, Naples, Helsinki, Warsaw, and other cities for Ukraine’s's accession to the European Union

On May 28 at 2:30 p.m., EUMANS, the movement of pan-European citizens, founded by political activist Marco Cappato, will be joining the Ukrainian communities and the NGO Promote Ukraine for a simultaneous signature drive in 10 European cities in favor of Ukraine's membership in the EU through the petition EUkraine Now, ahead of the European Council meeting in June.

Brussels, Paris, Vienna, Helsinki, Nicosia, Luxembourg, Prague, Milan, Naples, Warsaw, Ljubljana: people from all across Europe are coming together to support  Ukraine's accession to the  EU and citizenship rights for all Ukrainians. In just a few weeks, the European Council will take a position on Ukraine's membership bid. Now that the European Commission has launched the technical procedure and the European Parliament has passed a resolution in favor of accession, the Council meeting is what could really set the ball in motion. The signatures gathered will be sent to the heads of state and government prior to the European Council meeting scheduled for June 23 in Brussels.

In the words of Eumans co-presidents Marco Cappato and Virginia Fiume, "Ukraine's admission to the EU is crucial for expanding and reinforcing Europe as a shared space of democracy and the rule of law, ensuring a ‘sustainable peace’ for Ukrainians who want nothing more, once the war is over, than to re-embrace European values and policies. In parallel with the membership process, all European citizens will benefit if the EU is given stronger powers to sanction any member state that commits serious, systematic violations of the rule of law. The enlargement must become an opportunity for democratic reform, not just for Ukraine but for the European Union itself."

“The heart of the European Union is now beating in Ukraine. Already during the Orange Revolution in 2004, Euromaidan in 2014, Ukrainians made it very clear that European values, democracy and justice are paramount for our society”, commented Marta Barandiy, Founder and Chairwoman of Promote Ukraine. “Despite Russian anti-Ukrainian propaganda, cancellation of history and culture, attempts to infiltrate Ukrainian political elite through corruption, Ukrainians persevered on their European path. Today, when the country and European values are under attack, Ukrainians are paying the highest price to defend them. Our citizens deserve to know that they will be a part of the European Union. This will contribute to the victory in the war”. ”
